Biography
Libby Raymond retired in 2023 as a Partner of the international law firm of Mayer Brown LLP.  She specialized in mergers & acquisitions and was the co-head of the Financial Institutions M&A and Fintech groups. She focused on M&A for financial institutions, including commercial and investments banks, finance companies, insurance companies, asset managers and broker-dealers, and private equity and hedge funds that invest in financial service businesses. Libby’s practice required a thorough understanding of the underlying financial products and services of financial institutions, including the intersection of financial products and technology. Libby was also heavily involved in Mayer Brown’s management, including serving as Co-Chair of the Committee on Associates and Counsel and of the Partner Promotion Committee from 1998 to 2004, as a member of the firm’s governing Policy & Planning Committee from 2004 to 2009 and as a Corporate Practice Leader from 2011 to 2022.
Libby graduated summa cum laude from Princeton University in 1978. Her major was in Comparative Literature, specializing in medieval Latin and French. She received an MA from Clare College, Cambridge University in 1980, majoring in Medieval Languages. She received a JD from New York University School of Law in 1983, and practiced law for 40 years.
In retirement, Libby has enthusiastically returned to her first love of literature and history. She enjoys courses in the humanities with the University of Chicago’s Graham School, including branching out into philosophy, art history, and classical Greek and Latin literature and history.  She enjoys translating Latin literature, including completing Vergil’s Aeneid in 2024 and Ovid’s Metamorphoses in 2026. Her next ancient language endeavor will be to take Homeric Greek classes with the Graham School in the Fall of 2026. Libby is also an active Trustee of Goodman Theatre, including serving on its Executive Committee and as Co-Chair of the New Works Committee. She enjoys travelling and spending time with her husband, Paul Hybel, and with her family.
