Chicago Film in the 1960's

This course looks at film production in Chicago during the 1960’s, examining the sometimes overlapping interests of filmmakers working in fiction film, documentaries, and more experimental productions. The course pays particular attention to the early films of Philip Kaufman, as well as the work of distinctive Chicago filmmakers like Gordon Quinn and his colleagues at Kartemquin Films, and experimental filmmaker Tom Palazzolo. The course ends with two weeks devoted to the response of filmmakers to the events that occurred during the Democratic National Convention in 1968, where the line between the documentary and fiction elements combine, and where documentary filmmakers consider the aftermath of the protests and the police response, the impact these events had on the city, and how they might shape the city’s future.
