Crisis and Conscience: The Twentieth Century from Mahler to Shostakovich
This course was available in the past and may be presented again as part of the Open Enrollment curriculum.
The turbulent 20th century from the years just before WW1 and culminating in the end of the Soviet era are reflected in masterworks from late Mahler through Britten's "War Requiem" and the works of Stravinsky, Shostakovich, and his disciple, Schnittke, among others, creating a musical mirror through which a unique perspective on the epoch is recorded. Taught on zoom, there will be a multitude of recordings and videos to trace an unbroken chronicle of an always fascinating and sometimes calamitous time.
