This class will explore three of Euripides' plays which feature major heroines, in this case the heroines of the Trojan side of the Trojan war, all considered with respect to their positions at the end of the war. These plays not only present us with powerful and compelling women, but, written against the political backdrop of the policies of the Athenian empire, Euripides' choice in all three of these plays to focus on the outcomes of the Trojan war, here understood as a war driven by power and wealth, provides rich material for though. We will read the plays closely, discussing as many individual passages in class as time allows. Please read through line 789 of The Trojan Women for the first class.
