Definitely a page-turner and one of the most popular of the blockbuster 19th century French novels, The Count of Monte Cristo is also a surprisingly complex and rich piece of literature. Exploring a tale of intricate revenge, Dumas present us with an intricate variety of characters against a backdrop of the wealthy classes and emerging capitalism in French society, as well as a careful psychological portrait of betrayal and the seduction and ultimate damage done by vengeance. We will read and discuss this long but fun classic over 8 weeks, using the Penguin edition (Robin Buss translation). Please read chaps. 1-16 for the first class.
