Every now and then a great novel gives birth to a great film. What makes it possible? "I found myself reading Berlin Alexanderplatz in a way that you could hardly call reading – more like devouring, gobbling, gulping down..." shares Reiner Werner Fassbinder, creator of TV miniseries (1980) based on Alfred Döblin's modernist novel, Berlin Alexanderplatz (1929).We’ll devote six weeks to Döblin's book (ISBN 9781681371993) and four weeks to discussions of Fassbinder's miniseries (available as a DVD set or for streaming from the Criterion Collection). Please plan to view the miniseries at home. In class, we’ll watch only select scenes.
