Herodotus' history

Herodotus’s Histories

Cost
525.00

This course was available in the past and may be presented again as part of the Basic Program of Liberal Education curriculum.

Herodotus is the great storyteller of the ancient world and also perhaps the first multiculturalist. His stated goal is to write so that “great and wonderful deeds would not go unsung.” He recounts not only the deeds, but also the customs, folklore, religion and geography of the entire ancient Mediterranean world: Egyptians, Phoenicians, and Scythians as well as Greeks. In order to experience this rich panoply, we will read the entire Histories in the beautiful Landmark edition with its excellent maps, footnotes, and critical essays. For the first class, please read Book One through 1.94 (the story of Croesus).
