About the Event

Join the Basic Program community for the 2026 Basic Program Weekend: Moby-Dick, held April 17–19 at the University of Chicago’s Institute for the Study of Ancient Cultures (ISAC). The weekend begins with optional visits to Special Collections to view Melville and Moby-Dick manuscripts, followed by afternoon tea with Dean Seth Green at the Quadrangle Club. The formal program opens Friday evening with a keynote by John L. Bryant on the thread of Black consciousness in Moby-Dick, followed by a reception.

Throughout Saturday and Sunday, participants will engage in faculty-led lectures, small-group discussions, and a closing panel featuring all speakers. Optional activities include a group dinner at local Hyde Park restaurants and a screening of John Huston’s 1956 film Moby Dick. We invite you to spend the weekend exploring Melville’s work in the company of fellow learners and Basic Program instructors.
