Biography
Suneel Kamlani is a senior banking executive with over 30 years of experience running global markets and investment banking businesses. He is Chairman of the Board of MUFG Securities Americas and an Independent Director of MUFG Americas Holdings Corporation, the U.S. subsidiaries of the fifth largest global banking group (Mitsubishi UFJ). He also serves on the U.S. Risk Committee and U.S. Advisory Board of Mitsubishi UFJ Financial Group, Inc.
Mr. Kamlani was previously Co-Chief Executive Officer of Markets and President of Global Banking & Markets at the Royal Bank of Scotland (now NatWest Group). He was appointed to the RBS Group Executive Committee with responsibility for 118,000 staff in 39 countries. In this role, Mr. Kamlani strategically repositioned RBS’s global markets business to focus on its core strengths in financing, risk management and advisory services. He also developed and executed a plan to improve efficiency, de-risk the balance sheet and consolidate the bank’s geographic footprint.
Prior to joining RBS in 2010, Mr. Kamlani spent 22 years in senior management roles at UBS Investment Bank, rising to the position of Chief Operating Officer and member of the UBS Group Managing Board. He helped drive the restructuring of UBS’s global investment bank, enabling it to better compete in a new regulatory environment. For over two decades at UBS, he led Debt Capital Markets, Fixed Income and Investment Banking businesses in the U.S., Europe and Asia. He grew these businesses to become top tier franchises as measured by revenue, profitability and league table rankings. He advised major corporations, financial institutions and governments in more than 30 countries.
Mr. Kamlani served on the boards of UBS Limited and SIFMA Europe, as well as on advisory committees at the Bank of England, the International Monetary Fund and the Institute of International Finance. He began his investment banking career at Bankers Trust in New York. He has lived and worked in New York, Chicago, London and Hong Kong.
Mr. Kamlani has a B.A. in Economics from Northwestern University and was a Senior Advanced Leadership Fellow (2016-2017) at Harvard University. He chairs the Board of Advisors of the Northwestern Buffett Institute for Global Affairs. He also serves on the External Advisory Committee for the University of Chicago Leadership & Society Initiative and the Director’s Advisory Council for Harvard’s Advanced Leadership Initiative.
