Biography
Sharath Raja is currently a special student at the Harvard Graduate School of Arts and Sciences in the South Asian Studies Department. Sharath formerly served as the managing partner and president of Retina and Vitreous Consultants of Wisconsin in Milwaukee WI, one of the busiest vitreoretinal practices in the Midwest. He has an undergraduate degree in molecular biology from Princeton University (AB 1988) as well as his medical degree from the University of Chicago-Pritzker School of Medicine (MD 1992). His residency and fellowship training were at the Johns Hopkins Hospital, and Sharath served as a Major in the United States Air Force Medical Corps at McGuire AFB prior to practicing vitreoretinal surgery in Milwaukee. Sharath has 2 adult children and recently relocated to Cambridge, MA with his wife Nirmal.
Sharath is tremendously grateful to the University of Chicago for his medical training as well as preparing him to pursue a second career as a graduate student at Harvard. He notes that Professor Wendy Doniger at the University of Chicago MLA program was instrumental as a mentor helping him discover his passion for South Asian Studies as well as guiding him through this career transition.
