The Writer’s Studio at the University of Chicago offers online courses on a range of topics (fiction, memoirs, playwriting, poetry), as well as a manuscript consultation service. Classes are designed to support, inspire, and challenge writers across experience levels. Whether you are new to creative writing or polishing your professional prose, the Writer's Studio will help you take your writing to the next level.
Through a combination of in-class workshops and at-home readings and exercises, the Writer’s Studio offers a vibrant and supportive backdrop for your creative journey.
Courses range from introductory to advanced and are all taught in intimate classrooms by gifted instructors. We encourage students to choose courses based on their level of experience. Thursdays from 6:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.
Discover creative writing through in-class and at-home writing exercises; discussions of your and fellow students' work; and analysis of canonical and contemporary fiction, poetry, and creative nonfiction.
June 13—August 15
Mondays from 1:30 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.
Advance your understanding of fiction writing through lecture, eclectic readings, in-class and at-home writing exercises, and discussions of your—and fellow students'—written work. With a strong emphasis on drafting and strengthening the creative process, this class builds on the techniques and tools discussed in Basic Creative Writing.
June 23—August 11
Thursdays from 1:30 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.
This course is designed for writers who want to develop a script on which they have already begun to work. This may include anything from a full-length play to a one-act play to a series of short plays.
Innovative students and alumni of all backgrounds. Instructors who are not only award-winning journalists, novelists, poets, and playwrights, but expert discussion leaders. The Writer’s Studio comprises a dynamic network of writers who create powerful work in and out of the classroom.
