Create Diverse Characters with Nuance and Sensitivity

Cost
625.00

This course was available in the past and may be presented again as part of the Open Enrollment curriculum.

Today’s readers—as well as agents, editors, and publishers— expect stories that include diverse characters authentically portrayed. We’ll explore how to reach outside our own identities and experiences and experiment with ways to integrate skin color, ethnicity, race, gender, sexuality, ability, religion and culture with respect, sensitivity, and nuance into our writing. Through in-class readings, discussions, and writing exercises, we’ll study and learn from successful examples of diverse characters in contemporary texts and learn to craft dynamic, layered, multidimensional, and diverse characters from the inside out, bringing them to life with distinct personalities and voices that make them both compelling and authentic.
