Global warming is posing profound challenges to life and society. This course delves into the history of climate change, its consequences, and how we—individually and collectively—can respond. How did scientists first discover the reality of global warming? How have other environmental crises affected human societies in the past? What strategies have proven successful in stimulating broad and effective cooperation on environmental issues? This course examines these questions and more, offering a multifaceted encounter with one of the most serious scientific and policy topics of our time. No previous knowledge of climate science, climate history, or climate policy is necessary; students will emerge from this course with a greater understanding of how our species has contributed to the transformation of Earth’s climate, as well as appreciation for possible paths for forging a sustainable future.
