A critical and historical analysis of French painting in the 19th century with a central focus on the genesis of the Impressionist movement, its vision and the resulting form of the paintings. Each session will use paintings as the primary source of dialogue, drawing on the assigned reading for insight into the lives of the artists. Over the course, students are invited to take the necessary time to actively discover and see formal relationships that structure and sustain the work’s enduring presence. This course will take place online, with optional visits to the Art Institute of Chicago.
