At the University of Chicago Graham School, the Graduate Student-at-Large (GSAL) bridge programs offer more than academic access. They provide a thoughtfully designed, high-touch experience that helps students explore graduate pathways while becoming part of the intellectual life of the University.
Over the past decade, GSAL Enrichment Opportunities have become a defining part of that experience. What began as a series of opportunities for students to meet program directors and admissions staff has grown into a robust, multi-layered model of engagement. Today, students regularly connect with representatives from master’s and PhD programs across the University, building familiarity and confidence as they consider their next academic steps.
What differentiates GSAL from other non-degree programs?
GSAL combines rigorous academic access with individualized guidance, curated programming, and direct connection to the University community. Students are not simply taking courses; they are exploring graduate study with structured support, meaningful advising, and opportunities to engage with faculty, admissions professionals, alumni, and peers.
This approach grew out of a clear student need. Many GSAL students were eager to explore UChicago’s graduate pathways but did not always have a direct way to engage with those programs. GSAL offers intentionally created opportunities for connection, an approach that has since become foundational to the program.
As Esther Pandian-Riske, director of GSAL, explains, “When I began working with GSAL over 11 years ago, I became increasingly aware that many of our students were deeply interested in exploring UChicago’s MA, MBA, and PhD pathways, but did not always have a clear or direct way to engage with those programs. In response, I began developing a series of opportunities for our students to meet program directors and admissions colleagues, with the intention of creating familiarity, trust, and, over time, a more natural internal pathway into graduate study.”
“At the same time, it was important to me that GSAL students fully experience what it means to be part of the University of Chicago. While enrolled, they are full members of the University community, with access to a wide range of academic, professional, and wellness resources. From graduate school application advising and career coaching through UChicagoGRAD, to academic skills workshops, lectures, and support services, these resources are designed to help students engage deeply and confidently in their academic journey.”

Curated Access to Graduate Pathways
Today, GSAL Enrichment Opportunities take many forms, with virtual and in-person sessions that introduce students to programs across the humanities and social sciences to data science, public policy, and business. These sessions are designed as spaces for dialogue, where students can ask questions, engage with faculty, and begin to envision themselves within these academic communities.
This emphasis on access is paired with a high level of personalization. Through workshops and collaborations with campus partners, students gain meaningful exposure to the people and resources that shape graduate education.
As Assistant Director Marla Privitera notes, “The program offers incredible value through our quarterly programming that includes workshops with the professional schools and divisions, as well as UChicagoGRAD, Booth Admissions, and a Library Orientation, to name a few. Each workshop offers personalized and intimate opportunities for our GSAL students to meet with Admissions Directors, Faculty and Professionals from around the university who help tailor-make their GSAL experience.”
Support for Academic Exploration and Career Development
GSAL Enrichment Opportunities also help students connect academic exploration with long-term goals. Through fellowship and scholarship opportunities, library research tools, and career development support through UChicagoGRAD, students are encouraged to not only explore graduate study, but prepare for it with intention.
For students considering an MBA, that preparation can include direct engagement with Chicago Booth. As Senior Associate Director of Admissions, MBA Programs, Patrick McHale explains, “GSAL gives students the opportunity to experience the Booth School of Business firsthand through individual courses and engagement with our community before committing to a full degree program. If a student later applies to and enrolls in a Booth MBA program, up to three Booth courses taken through GSAL can count toward degree requirements. Our team is always excited to connect with current GSALB students as they consider taking the next step in their academic and professional journey at Booth.”
GSAL’s support also extends beyond academics. As part of the program’s comprehensive approach to student and alumni programming, Dean of Students Michelle Libby partners with GSAL once each quarter to host “GSAL/Dean of Students Wellness Office Hours,” creating additional space for connection, support, and reflection throughout the student experience.
What role does community play in the GSAL experience?
Community is central to the GSAL experience because it helps students feel connected to one another and to the University as they navigate ambitious academic goals. Each quarter, students are invited to participate in both in-person and virtual gatherings, including a growing network of events that extend learning beyond the classroom. These spaces create opportunities for students to share experiences, discuss coursework and faculty, and build relationships that often become foundational to their time at UChicago.
As Marla states, “The GSAL community is unlike any other community of students I have known. Our students come from every corner of the world, are 22 to 90 years old, and their interests are just as varied. Their individual choices to return to the classroom in the face of so many other paths to consider, unite them like sharing a common, yet unspoken understanding.”
Students echo this perspective in their own experiences. For Samuel David, “It has been a wonderful and unique experience to meet people of all different ages and backgrounds, pursuing all different kinds of goals. My consciousness and curiosity have been expanded and I have made lasting friendships.”
Yunhan Bi reflects on a similar impact, “Starting my first quarter at UChicago in rigorous math courses was both intimidating and exciting, but the close-knit community I found through GSAL happy hours and events helped me feel at home very quickly. Beyond the friendships I built, GSAL also provided an incredible range of resources, from mental health support like the ‘Let’s Talk’ sessions to academic workshops where students could connect directly with program directors and admissions staff. Through the five courses I took at UChicago through GSAL, I was able to build meaningful relationships, earn a recommendation letter from a UChicago professor, and ultimately gain admission to the graduate program I wanted. I truly do not think I could have made this career change into quantitative finance without GSAL and its community.”
Alumni, Mentorship, and Student Outcomes
GSAL’s impact extends further through initiatives like the Friday Alumni Career Conversations Series, a quarterly virtual series that brings alumni back into the community to reflect on their academic journeys and professional pathways. These conversations provide students with a clearer understanding of how GSAL coursework can translate into graduate study and career outcomes, while also opening the door to mentorship and continued connection.
For students like Michael Sweis, who specialize in tracks like GSAL-B, these benefits are especially pronounced, “I began the GSAL-B program in July 2024. The mentorship, collaboration, and sense of community it provides are unparalleled and incredibly valuable. Through the program, I’ve not only been able to complete coursework at Chicago Booth, but I am also able to connect with colleagues, build friendships through both in-person and virtual events, and participate in various Graham School activities. Overall, GSAL-B has given me a strong sense of community and further strengthened my interest in pursuing a graduate program at the University of Chicago. I look forward to continue my journey at GSAL-B.”
